Carpe Diem: Seize The Day

51

By Allan Cockerill

Carpe diem is a phrase from a poem by the Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus (known in the English speaking world as Horace).

The phrase was used in the movie "Dead Poets Society", where it was translated as"seize the day".

The movie "Dead Poets Society" is a film directed by Peter Weir and starring Robin Williams.

The movie is set in a conservative boys school in 1959. More...

The term Carpe diem is generally translated as "Pick, pluck off, gather", as you would when picking an apple off the tree, or a rose off a bush.

Seize the day then talks of living life to the full, with no regrets.

I've been thinking about the term a lot over the past few days, and even wrote a brief post about it on Coffee With Allan,

To me, it ties in with chapter 3 of the book of Ecclesiastes: To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven, a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted...

Everything comes to us in time, and so rather than worry, we need to develop a trust, and a faith.

It's futile while making plans for the future, and working towards them, to forget the present, and neglect those around us.

Forgetting who we are, and neglecting meaningful relationships with loved ones, will only cost us dearly in the end.

After all, time, and our loved ones are all that we really have.

Living A Life Without Regret

Is it possible to live a life without regrets?

Not without forgiveness, and that includes forgiving ourselves, as well as those who have hurt us. Forgiveness of course is a two way street, and we need to ask forgiveness more times than we'd like to admit.

And asking is no good if there is no acceptance of forgiveness....

Taking the time while it is still today to invest time with family and friends saves regrets later, as does thinking before we speak.

Learn to worship, commune with nature, and to the best of your ability, be at peace with your neighbor.

All of these things may sound simple, and indeed they are. But they work!

Have A Great Day!
